Barrydale Cares

“Barrydale Cares” is an initiative that was started just two years ago in an endeavour to collectively help the underprivileged in our Barrydale area.  We needed to create awareness that we have a fulltime social worker employed in our area namely, Mrs  Annaline Zulch, who is employed by the ACVV and that all assistance that could be rendered would be channeled through her.  “Barrydale Cares” supports and assists Annaline in some of the following ways:

a)  We request and receive donations of money which is utilized to buy food, school uniforms and any other dire needs that may arise.
b)  Donations of food are placed in the box at the OK by residents for the needy.
c)  People donate their used clothing, new and used blankets and linen to us which is then sorted for distribution.
d)  A few ladies in the town hand knit children’s jerseys and beanies for the poor.
e)  For the past two years we have delivered Christmas hampers to over 30 very poor families each year.

All the above is handed out or authorized by Annaline as most desperate needs come to her attention.   “Barrydale Cares” has received cash donations from America, England and Germany as well as many in our own community.  Donors are kept up to date with news and spreadsheets on a regular basis.  This is totally voluntary initiative and every cent received goes into the requirements of the community.  Cash is not handed out.

“Barrydale Cares” has really grown in this short time and is hugely appreciated by our social worker as she knows she has back-up in her difficult and demanding job.  Annaline also knows that she can look to us for assistance in any dire need she regularly comes across.

The Karoo Animal Protection Society (KAPS) was born out of one woman's concern for the terrible condition of animals in the poor communities. When Colette Teale moved to Barrydale in 1999 (with husband Percy) to live at Klipfontein Farm, 8 km outside the village, she took it upon herself to make daily visits to the surrounding deprived areas, quietly educating, providing food, releasing dogs from cruel chains, and ensuring animals had water and shelter from the hot Klein Karoo sun.
